Kelly Ramirez came alive in the second half and provided another offensive weapon for the Lady Redskins. Her offensive output came just in time to help lift the Lady Redskins over the Hays Lady Indians 56-49 during homecoming.
The Lady Redskins fell behind early and trailed 12’7 with 2:31 to play in the first quarter.
Jai Chapman tied the game late in the quarter, but a three by Brooke Russell gave the Lady Indians the lead at the end of the period.
Mariela Nunez made her second three of the game to open the second quarter and tied the game, 15-15.
Hays jumped back to a 26-21 lead with 2:43 to play in the second quarter, but Chapman responded with a basket, a free throw, and Carolina Limon added a basket to complete a 5-0 run and tie the game.
By half, Hays had a one-point lead.
Jada Mickens scored Liberal’s first six points of the second half, and Ramirez came alive to add seven more, and by the end of the third the Lady Redskins had a 40-35 lead.
The Lady Redskins pushed out to a seven point lead in the first two minutes of the fourth, and after back-to-back threes by Megan Besecker with 2:58 to play, the Lady Redskins had a 54-39 lead.
Hays ended on a 9-2 run, but the Lady Redskins were able to coast to the 56-48 win.
Mickens made five of eight free throws in the fourth quarter to help secure the win, and 10 of her 18 points came from the free throw line.
Ramirez scored nine points, all in the second half, and Chapman added eight.
