GUYMON, Oka. — The Guymon Lady Tigers learned just how brutal an extended drought can be.
Liberal did not allow a Lady Tiger basket for more than 16 minutes Friday, and that allowed the Lady Redskins to establish a lead that was too much for the Lady Tigers to overcome. Liberal cruised to a 50-30 win in a game that got physical in the final moments.
Liberal used three early three-pointers to keep pace with he Lady Tigers, and after the Lady Tigers took a 13-12 lead with 1:57 to play in the first quarter, Guymon would not score again until late in the third.
Liberal opened the second quarter with Megan Besecker’s third three of the game. Jada Mickens added two baskets in the second, and the rest of Liberal’s points came from the free throw line. Liberal made five of 11 attempts in the quarter, and the Lady Redskins had a 27-13 lead at half.
The Lady Tigers had chances to break their scoring drought early in the second half, but Guymon missed four straight free throw attempts, and their offense was limited to one-shot opportunities while Mickens and Besecker dominated the rebounds.
Mickens continued to be a force in the paint, scoring three more baskets, and Jai Chapman added another.
The Tigers finally broke their scoreless streak with 2:44 remaining in the quarter, and they responded with big shots from outside.
By the end of the quarter, the Lady Tigers hit three long-range three pointers to cut Liberal’s lead to 35-22.
Liberal was the model of consistency in the fourth quarter. Each possession resulted in a quality shot, and most went in. When they didn’t, the Lady Redskins were fouled.
The Lady Redskins had a 46-30 lead with less than two minutes to play when Kelly Ramirez battled a Lady Tiger for a loose ball. Ramirez rose from the floor with the ball as the officials signaled a tie-up, but the Lady Tiger took exception to Ramirez and punched her in the arm after the play had ended. The officials called a double technical, and both players remained in the game for the final two minutes.
Liberal added two free throws and a late basket for the 50-30 win.
Mickens led Liberal with 16 points. Chapman had 13, and Besecker added 12.
