The Lady Redskin defense was relentless in the first three quarters against Scott City Friday night in The Big House, and the huge lead allowed the Lady Redskins to survive a fourth-quarter push by the Lady Beavers in a 38-24 Lady Redskin win.

While Scott City focused on shutting down Jai Chapman, shot came open for Kelly Ramirez, Jada Mickens and other Lady Redskins.

Liberal controlled the offensive boards early for put-back shots that pushed the Lady Redskins to an 8-3 lead in the first quarter.

Scott City’s offense struggled against the Lady Redskin defense, and the Lady Beavers only scored two points in the second quarter.

Liberal scored 11 including a three from Stephanie Sanchez, and the Lady Redskins had a 19-5 halftime lead.

Kambrie Long and Mariela Nuñez opened the second half with baskets to give Liberal its biggest lead, 23-5.

Scott City pushed back  with a 10-2 run, and Liberal’s lead was cut to 10 at the end of the third.

The Lady Beavers had a 9-4 run to start the fourth to cut Liberal’s lead to 29-24 with 3:52 to play.

Scott City never scored again, and the Lady Redskins ended with a 9-0 run for the 38-24 win.

“You can never relax in basketball,” Liberal coach Bill Baird said. “As soon as you do, you are humbled, and I feel a little humbled tonight. We had some ugly turnovers, we didn’t rebound like we could and we didn’t make shots. But when you win, you can’t complain.”

Mickens led the Lady redskins with eight points. Despite an all-out effort to take Chapman out of the game, she still scored seven. Ramirez had six, and Jasmine Hernandez had five.
