split track PDF Print E-mail

ABOVE: A Union Pacific crew works to repair a section of track that split earlier this morning between Kansas and Pershing avenues. Cold temperatures caused the rail to contract and separate near the cone (center of photo), and all rail traffic on the line had to be canceled until the crew was able to repair the track. The crew was working in temperatures around 10 degrees. Because the work took place about a block from Kansas Avenue, the arm guards came down and caused disruptions in vehicle traffic. Local law enforcement as well as Union Pacific crew members lifted the gates by hand to allow traffic to flow through a few at a time. Work continued, and as of press time was still ongoing. LEFT: Just to the left of the traffic cone, one can see the separation of the rail, which appears to be at least a foot wide.
