Fourth-seed Southwestern Heights may have started slow in the first round of the Hi-Plains League tournament Thursday in Sublette, but they finished strong to earn a 71-62 win over fifth-seed Elkhart and advanced to the semi-finals.
The Mustangs trailed 16-10 after the first quarter, but Heights was abel to score 19 in the second quarter to trim the Wildcat lead to three at half, 32-29.
The Mustangs continued to trim the Elkhart advantage in the third quarter, and by the start of the fourth Heights had tied the game, 50-50.
The Mustangs opened the floodgated in the fourth, outscoring Elkhart 24-15 to claim a 71-62 win.
Cody Jennings led the charge for the Mustangs, scoring 18 points and just missing a double double with nine rebounds.
Nathan Johnsrud scored 15 points, Jorge Dela Torre added 14 points, Frank Herrera had 12 points, and Alexis Loya scored 10.
The win advanced Heights (6-4) to a semi-final showdown with the top-seeded Meade Buffaloes (7-1).
Meade advanced to the semi-finals with a first round win over Syracuse, 63-56.
Heights and Meade will face off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Garden City Community College.
