Wins may not be coming as easy as most have in Barry Mellen’s decorated history at Southwestern Heights, but his last season as the head coach has still had some highs including Friday night’s 57-24 win over Sublette.
The Lady Mustangs and Lady Larks played an even first quarter, but the Heights defense took over the rest of the way in the rout.
Heights only had a three-point lead after the first eight minutes, but by halftime the Lady Mustangs had extended to a 28-16 advantage.
The Lady Mustangs continued to make scoring difficult for the Lady Larks in the second half. Heights outscored Sublette 11-2 in the third quarter.
The domination continued in the final eight minutes with an 18-6 advantage for the Lady Mustangs in the fourth quarter for the 57-24 final.
Jackie Loya had a big night for the Lady Mustangs with a double double. Loya scored 12 points including a three pointer and grabbed 15 rebounds in the win.
Nayelly LaPoint continued to lead the Lady Mustangs in scoring with a 17-point performance that included a long-range three. LaPoint is averaging 11 points per game.
Ivon Amparan added 10 points, and Viancy Jiminez also chipped in 10 points in the win.
The win moved the Lady Mustangs to 5-5 on the season but more importantly kept them perfect in the Hi-Plains League at 4-0.
The Lady Mustangs will now prepare for the Hi-Plains League tournament Tuesday.
