A van filled with two women and four toddlers ranging in ages from 1 to 4 rolled Wednesday afternoon northwest of Liberal, but fortunately, only two were taken to Southwest Medical Center for treatment of “possible injuries,” according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Veronica T. Garcia, 26, of Ulysses, was driving a 1996 white Dodge Grand Caravan westbound on Seward County Road 9 around 4 p.m. 1.7 miles west of U.S. Highway 83 when the van entered the south ditch and then came back onto the roadway. Garcia then “overcorrected and the vehicle re-entered the south ditch, causing the vehicle to make half a roll coming to rest on its roof,” according to the report.

The other female passenger, Karla Y. Lara, 23, also of Ulysses, was transported to the hospital with “possible” injuries.

The children in the van at the time of the incident included three boys, ages 1, 2, and 4, and a girl age 4.

The 4-year-old boy was also taken to Southwest Medical Center for “possible” injuries, while the other three were reported to have “no injuries.”

The report also noted all four children were utilizing safety restraints, while the two women were not.
