HOOKER — Texhoma boys basketball coach Greg Higgins wants his team to penetrate the lane to establish the inside shot. In the first half of Tuesday’s game at Hooker, the Red Devils failed to get inside, shooting mostly from the perimeter, and trailed at halftime against the Bulldogs.

All that change in the second half, as the Red Devils got the ball to the post and rallied for a 60-50 win over Hooker, avenging a 19-point loss to the Bulldogs in Texhoma last month.

“We just didn’t have an inside presence, it was all outside perimeter,” Higgins said. “We forgot about the inside (post) Nathan Knitig didn’t have any points the first half, ended up with 12.”

The first quarter ended in a 13-all tie as the lead changed hands four time in the first eight minutes.

Hooker surged to a 7-2 lead as John Godfrey, Dakotah McBride and Dayton Metcalf all scored. But Texhoma (7-5 overall) rallied to take the lead at 9-8 behind Moises Garay and Ramy Anderson.

After Taylor Folsom gave Texhoma the lead 13-11, McBride scored to tie it to end the first.

Hooker took a 28-22 lead at the half behind Godfrey, McBride and Metcalf.

Metcalf and Brandon Gomez lifted Hooker to an 8-point advantage to open the third quarter, then Texhoma made its move with a 13-2 run led by Garay, Folsom and Dylan Koehn to take a 38-36 lead.

But Metcalf and Alex Juarez tied it back for Hooker before Texhoma regained the lead at 45-41 to end the third.Hooker would bring it back to a 1-point game at 45-44 behind McBride and Metcalf, but Texhoma exerted its dominance as Hooker seemed to run out of gas and the Red Devils pulled away for the win.

McBride led Hooker with 15 points, Metcalf and Godfrey each scored 14 for the Bulldogs, which plays host to No. 9 Class A Laverne on Friday night.

Garay led Texhoma with 15, Taylor Folsom 13, Knitig 12 and Koehn 11.
