Perryton used four three pointers in the final moments of the second half to cut an 11-point Redskin lead down to two and then pushed late in the fourth quarter to knock off the Redskins 62-53.
Liberal’s Nolan Larkin started the game with aggressive drives to the hoop and his frist three shots all ended with baskets and fouls on Perryton defenders. Larkin scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter.
Elmer Quintana put an exclamation point on the first period with a three-pointer that gave the Redskins an 18-10 lead.
The Redskins pushed out to an 11-point lead in the second quarter after Jared Hasik hit a runner through the lane that gave the Redskins a 27-16 lead with 2:48 to play before half.
Perryton then found its mark form the three-point line.
Keeton Willeford hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead to five, and Jordan Plank added another to slice the lead to two.
Blake Stout returned the favor for Liberal with a three-pointer, but Plank answered with another shot from downtown that cut Liberal’s lead to two at half.
Perryton outscored the Redskins 17-13 in the third quarter including another three form Plank, and the Redskins trailed 45-43.
Stout made a basket and was fouled with 5:52 to play, and after making the free throw the Redskins had a 46-45 lead.
The Rangers answered with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 53-46 lead.
Cade Hinkle hit a three-pointer with 1:29 to play to cut the lead to 55-51, but the Redskins couldn’t get any closer as missed shots and turnovers down the stretch thwarted any attempt of a comeback.
“We got away from what we should do,” Liberal coach scott Hinkle said. “We had a panicked look on our face. We quit running our offensive sets. I told them if we come out the first few minutes of the second half and re-establish this, maybe they roll over. If not you will have a battle to the end.”
The last five minutes proved to be the difference when the Redskins did not respond to an 8-0 Ranger run.
“Things unraveled on us,” Hinkle said. “Hopefully we regroup. We have some soul searching to do over the break. We need to find some guys that will go to war with us.”
Larkin led all scorers with 20, Stout scored nine, and Britton abbott had eight.
“We have to make them play defense more than one pass,” Hinkle said. “We have to be more patient. We have to make them play defense.
