FORGAN-Even for good teams it is not always easy or smooth, and the shots do not always fall. But a good team can find a way to win even when that happens, and the Forgan Lady Bulldogs did just that it defeating Fort Supply 34-23 to win the Class B District 4 championship.
“It was a definite grind tonight,” said Lady Bulldogs coach Brett Trippet. “I was proud of the kids for hanging in there. We didn’t play the best, but we saw some things we haven’t seen all year. We worked on some things and found a way to pull out a win.”
Senior forward Miranda Lopez found herself in a peculiar position with Fort Supply’s defensive strategy. When Lopez would catch on the perimeter, Fort Supply dared her to take the outside shot.
“She (Lopez) hadn’t had anyone play defense on her like that all year. So it was her first time to see something like that,” said Trippet
Lopez has been a key cog in the Lady Bulldogs attack, but most of her work is done near the basket and in transition. But on this night she sunk three shots from beyond the arc, and all three were crucial.
Lopez’ first three gave the Lady Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 5-3, with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Her other two were the first and final points of Forgan’s only significant run of the night, a 9-0 run to end the third and start the fourth. That stretch turned a three-point game into a 12-point game.
Forgan never relinquished their lead once they had it, but Fort Supply made sure the game stayed within reach. The Lady Bulldogs led 9-7 after one quarter and 18-13 at the half.
Fort Supply shot 40 percent from the field compared to only 30 percent for Forgan, but Forgan took 43 shots to only 25 for Fort Supply. Forgan was 3 of 20 from three-point range and struggled at the line also (3 of 11).
Defense was the difference as Forgan never allowed Fort Supply to score more than seven points in a quarter and only four field goals in the second half.
Lopez led all scorers with 14 points, and grabbed 9 rebounds and four steals. Kenzi Taylor was 5 of 8 from the field for 10 points, 9 rebounds, and two steals. Lindsey Trippet was 4 of 7 from the field for 8 points. She also tallied four assists and two steals.
Forgan is now 22-2 on the season and will host Boise City, Thurday at 6:30, in the first round of the regional tournament.
