Despite a valiant effort, the Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs could not overcome the Ulysses Lady Tigers, falling 51-47 Friday in the second round of the Blue and Red Classic in Hugoton.
The game started slowly for both teams with a combined 15 points being scored in the first quarter. After one, the Lady Mustangs had a slim 8-7 lead.
Even fewer points were scored in the second quarter, as Heights managed only three more points to close out the half, and trailed 15-11.
There was an explosion of offense in the second half of play, as the Lady Mustangs doubled their offensive output from the first two quarters, but still found themselves behind 26-22 after three quarters of play.
The final quarter was filled with fast-paced action and plenty of scoring. Heights had begun to break the full-court press of the Lady Tigers and cashed in on a multitude of points, scoring 25 in the fourth quarter alone.
Unfortunately for the Lady Mustangs, Ulysses was able to keep up with them every step of the way, scoring 25 points of their own in the final quarter to grab a 51-47 win.
Nayelly LaPoint led the way for Heights, scoring 17 points in a losing effort. Diana Carrillo chipped in with 11, and Ivon Amparan added six.
The Lady Mustangs played the Lakin Lady Broncs at 3 p.m. Saturday in Hugoton to close out their Blue and Red Classic.
