The Tyrone Bobcats advanced to the finals of the High Plains Invitational with a 53-34 win over the Goodwell Eagles Friday night.
Tyrone allowed Goodwell only five points in the second half to pull away.
“We changed from a box-and-one zone to a man-to man defense,” Bobcats coach Clay Witt said.
At the offensive end of the floor, Tyrone started following their coaches gameplan as well.
“We started getting it inside to our big guys, and started penetrated the lane,” Witt said. “They packed it down in the lane, and we made the open shots we needed too.”
Early in the game things did not go in Tyrone’s favor. Goodwell was able to build a 12-point lead.
“The game did not start like we wanted it too,” Witt said. “We wanted to start up tempo and press, and make them play out of their comfort zone. But they broke our press, and hit shots.”
Tyrone was able to cut the lead back to just four by half, 29-25.
The Bobcats will face the Felt Bulldogs in the finals. Felt defeated Boise City in a barnburner with Felt hitting the game winning shot with .4 seconds left in the game. Boise City hit a three-quarter court shot after that for an apparent game winning miracle shot, but it was disallowed with the referees saying the clock had expired before the shot left the shooter’s hand.
Tyrone 46, Yarbrough 11
The Tyrone Lady Bobcats got back on the winning track with a rousing 46-11 win over the Lady Lobos.
Tyrone was in complete control by half, up 26-4.
Yarbrough had two players foul out and finished the game with just four players.
“A lot better shooting today and better defense,” Lady Bobcats coach Clay Witt said.
Tyrone faced off against Keyes Saturday in the consolation game.
