By Cheryl Louderback of Liberal
I was deeply saddened when I read of the dismissal of Liberal High School coach Cliff Abbott.
This man has taken a fallen program of one of LHS’ favorite sports and built it back up again toward winning seasons. But more than that, he has given his heart and spirit to the young people in our community to learn the game of football, and at the same time, learn life’s values.
Our community will see the results of what Mr. Abbott has taught our young people for years to come. His leadership values in coaching players to their best abilities shows through because he does it with Christian values.
They have learned much more than just how to play football.
Coach Abbott has a remarkable ability for getting the best out of all those around him. He has helped create a newfound respect and understanding of the game.
My heart is sad that it was decided to throw away a man who has always shown compassion and respect for the players and everyone else – and knows how to get respect for the game in such positive ways.
If the district is not willing to let a coach do his job more than three seasons, I am wondering how we will ever get a winning team again?
Beyond that, my heart is sad because we have lost a coach that truly made a difference in those students’ lives by teaching them life goals.
Coach Abbott has been a beacon on a hill, and our football program has made gigantic strides under his leadership.
I close by saying, “Thank you Cliff Abbott, for giving back to Liberal.”
