The Hooker Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-0 lead and hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter as they cruised to a 68-24 win over the Turpin Lady Cardinals.

“We were able to play a lot of kids and get them some game experience,” Lady Bulldogs Coach Ray Kennedy said. “We got some turnovers and got some quick buckets. We were able to work on our press, which we haven’t been able to as much as I’d like.”

The Lady Bulldogs came out in a full court press, and caused the Lady Cardinals to commit turnovers, which Hooker converted into easy baskets. Hooker added to their 13-0 start with Naomi Rodriguez, Vanessa Wiebe, and Shania Miller all draining threes in the first quarter to help build a 22-2 lead.

Only a three by Turpin’s Alyssa Kinser, who led the Lady Cardinals with 8 points, in the final seconds of the quarter kept it from being a 20-point Lady Bulldogs advantage heading into the second quarter.

Mixing starters and bench players, Hooker continued to build their lead with a 17-10 advantage in the second quarter to lead 39-15 at half.

By the end of the third quarter the Lady Bulldogs lead was 39, and a 15-0 fourth quarter, all done with the starters on the bench, made the final difference 44 points.

Kyra Cathcart led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points. Cathcart scored 12 in the first half and finished the game 8 of 8 at the free throw line. Vanessa Weibe finished with 12, including a pair of threes, and Naomi Rodriquez scored 10. Ten different players scored for Hooker.

Hooker is now 5-0, and heads into the Blue and Red Tournament in Hugoton, where they will face Ulysses Thursday, with confidence.

“I’m really pleased,” Kennedy said. “We’ve beat a couple of really good teams. We’ve got four starters back from last year. I think we’re headed in the right direction. We just have to keep getting better.”
