TURPIN — The Fowler Goldbugs outscored the Turpin Cardinal 19-4 in the first quarter, and looked like they were headed for a blowout win. But Turpin battled back the rest of the way, but could not overcome Fowler’s large, early lead, falling 54-41.

“Right now we’re so young,” Cardinals coach Gary Wallace said. “We start too slow and are just too inconsistent. We don’t understand the game well enough, but we’re getting there. We’re running the offense too slow. We’ll get it fixed.”

With four minutes left in the first quarter Turpin trailed just 5-4, but a 14-0 run to end the first quarter gave the Goldbugs a lead they would not relinquish.

Turpin did make a move to start the second quarter with a 7-0 run that made the score 19-11. Fowler hit their fourth and fifth 3-point baskets of the first half to get out of their slump and led 29-18 at the half.

Both squads struggled at the start of the third with Turpin scoring the first points of the quarter with 5:02 left. The basket cut the lead to single digits (29-20).

But Fowler kept pace with the Cardinals, and led 39-27 heading into the fourth quarter. Fowler was able to build their lead in the fourth to take home the 13-point win.

Fowler hit six threes in the game and was 10-10 at the free throw line. Turpin finished 7 of 11 at the line, and for the second straight game, did not hit a 3-point basket.

“We know our limitations,” Wallace said. “Were not a good shooting team and we have to play to our strengths which in penetrate and get to the basket.”

Turpin point guard Jordan Lujan led the Cardinals offense with 19 points.

Turpin (0-2) will face off against Texhoma, Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in the first round of the Laverne Tournament which has been moved up one day from its normal Thursday start.
