Don’t be deceived by Chiefs record PDF Print E-mail

Despite last night’s loss on the road to the Denver Broncos, the Kansas City Chiefs have had an amazing turnaround this season.

At 9-1, the Chiefs are tied with the aforementioned Broncos for the second best record in the NFL, trailing only the 10-1 Seattle Seahawks. That’s quite an achievement for a team that finished 2-14 last year.

But there is a lot of data that suggests why this team is 9-1.

Lets begin with their schedule. They have the easiest schedule in football this season. That’s the advantage of finishing last in 2012. The combined record of the nine teams they have beat this year is 34-58 up to this point. That equates to a winning percentage of .369. Only seven teams in the NFL currently have a winning percentage lower than that. Three of those teams are Jacksonville, Houston and Buffalo, all of whom the Chiefs have beaten this year.

Their offense has faced weak defenses, and their defense has faced weak offenses. Of the nine defenses that their offensive unit had faced prior to last night, six of them rank in the bottom 11 in the league in points allowed this season.

And of the nine offensive units their defense had faced prior to last night, six of them ranked in the bottom half of the league in points scored this season.

Don’t get me wrong, I do not hate the Chiefs, but numbers don’t lie. There are a lot of things to love about them. I’m excited about the possibilities. I’m a huge Eric Berry fan, the guy is a beast. I’m just not an Alex Smith fan. I don’t think he will ever lead them deep into the post season.

They might have put up a good fight last night, but they are not ready for prime time. Not yet. Look for Kansas City to finish up this season 4-2 over their last six games. That would put them at 13-3, and most likely give them a first round bye in the playoffs. Unfortunately, they will be out in the second round. Sorry Chiefs fans.
