After playing in two consecutive state championship games, and winning the title in 2011, Liberal will not be playing in a third.

The Redskins were eliminated from the Class 5A state playoffs Thursday by private Catholic school Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 2-1 in overtime.

Kapaun scored early to take a 1-0 lead, but Pedro Lara tied the game with 10 minutes to play n the first half.

Neither team scored in the second half, and Kapaun was able to score the game-winning goal in the first five minutes of overtime for the win.

With Liberal eliminated and defending champions, private school Bishop Miege dropping to Class 4A, a new champion will be guaranteed in Class 5A this season.
