Springfield cemetery to be protected, memorial for those interred there

A discussion between a local historian and the Seward County Commission began in 2012 regarding the clean up and resetting of stones and fencing around Springfield Cemetery.

The county’s road and bridge department was asked by Tony Whisenant to help with the project, and after visiting with the landowner, the approximate location where the original stones had been set had been determined.

From there, road and bridge workers went to rest those stones and put a fence up around the area. The department absorbed the cost of clean up, resetting stones and placement of the fence.

As of now, the stones have been found, cleaned up and reset, debris has been cleared, gravel spread and a fence placed.

According to information in the agenda packet, for tonight’s county commission meeting, road and bridge Supervisor Tony Herrman received a price of around $2,500 to set a stone memorial at Springfield Cemetery with the names of others buried there whose monuments are missing.

Herrman will discuss the item with the county commission at the board’s meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m. today in the commission chambers in the Seward County Administration Building.
