Southwestern Heights earned their third ‘W’ of the season Friday with a 24-13 road win over the Syracuse Bulldogs.
The Mustangs controlled the game with a steady rushing attack.
Led by sophomore Efrain Chavez, Southwestern Heights gained 227 yards on the ground, with Chavez accounting for 166 of those yards on 31 carries and a touchdown. Chavez also added 24 yards on kick returns.
Chavez did struggle to hold on to the ball, fumbling the ball three times, two of which resulted in Mustang turnovers.
Junior quarterback Brandon Kisner completed 6-of-10 passes for 32 yards for the Mustangs on the night. Kisner also added four carries for 20 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore receiver Jorge Dela Torre caught four of Kisner’s passes for 29 yards on the night.
The Heights defense gave the Bulldogs fits, as the Syracuse quarterback was constantly under pressure. Dela Torre, Saul Sanchez, Cody Jennings and Peter Klassen as had sacks in the game.
Sanchez had 13 tackles for the Mustangs, and sophomore Ivan Rascon chipped in with 12 tackles of his own.
Heights also forced three fumbles, recovering two of them. Sanchez, Dela Torre and Jennings each forced a fumble, while Sanchez and sophomore Kyle Coats each had a fumble recovery.
The win is the second in a row for the Mustangs, and improves their record to 3-2 on the season. They will head to Hugoton on Friday to take on the Eagles.
