Miss Liberal Pageant Director Lu Haynes has announced the young women who will try to win the crown of Miss Liberal 2010 Sunday, Feb. 14, at the James Maskus Auditorium at Liberal High School. The event will be emceed by Chris Jewell and Miss Kansas 2009 Becki  Ronen. The pageant kicks off at 2 p.m. and tickets are available in advance for $7 at First National Bank, Sunflower Bank and Rick’s Hair Design. Tickets at the door will be $8.

JORDAN EDER

is a sophomore at Seward County Community College maintaining a 4 point grade average every semester. She was on the President’s Honor Roll each semester, awarded Presidential Scholarship, secretary of Phi Theta Kappa, and was nominated for the All-Kansas Academic Team. She is Co-Captain of the Seward County Community College Cheer Squad, and President of Collegiate Farm Bureau. Her future ambition is to obtain a Ph D in Microbiology. Jordan’s platform is “Educating America in Agriculture.”

For her talent presentation, Jordan will be playing a flute solo to “June Bacarole.”

Jordan’s parents are Toni and Joel Eder.

EMILY JACKSON

is a senior at Liberal High School where she is president of her class and is also the Valedictorian of her graduating Class of 2010. She is a KU Honors Scholar, Secretary of the Student Council, Kansas Board of Regents Curriculum Completer, Secretary of the National Honor Society and has received outstanding awards in almost every class. Emily is also captain of the LHS Dance Team and has been a member of several sports teams. Her plans are to pursue a Masters Degree in Biological Engineering at KSU. Her platform is “Girls Empowered.”

For her talent, Emily will be performing a Jazz Dance to “The Way You Make Me Feel.”

Emily’s parents are Reenie Jackson and Bruce Jackson.

ELISABETH KERBOW

is a senior at Liberal High School where she has been a member of the Odyssey of the Mind ; a member of the Drama Club; and also member of Thespians. She has received the award “Ambassador for the City of Liberal as a Dorothy at the Land of Oz. Her future ambition is to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and to teach drama. Elisabeth’s platform is “Domestic Violence/Sexual Abuse.”

For her talent, Elisabeth will be singing “I’m Not That Girl” by “Wicked.”

Her parents are Tessa Kerbow and Jeramie Michael King.

KELSI MOREE

is a senior at Liberal High School where she has a lead role in the Liberal High School play, is a member of the Redskin Singers, has performed many lead roles in musicals , and is a member of the International Thespian Society. She was secretary of the Drama Club her junior year, State Honor Choir her sophomore year and has been a Dorothy at Dorothy’s House. Kelsi is in the youth group at First Baptist Church. Her scholastic ambitions are to obtain a Masters degree in Political Science with a Minor in Personal Wellness. Kelsi’s platform is “Health and Fitness.”

Her talent presentation will be a vocal solo, titled “Tomorrow.”

Kelsi’s parents are Cynthia Moree and the late Anthony Ray Moree.

SHENIECE MORTON

is a sophomore at Seward County Community College where she has received awards as a member of the dance team, “Saintsation.” She is also an AVID tutor of Liberal High School and West Middle School. Sheneice is also employed at Subway Sandwiches. Her ambitions are to obtain a degree in pre-med.

Her platform is “College Expenses.”

For her talent, Sheniece will be singing “My Girl.”

Sheniece’s mother is Iris Faye Huskey.

BARBARA NAEGELE

is a senior at Liberal High School where she in the National Honor Society, is in the top 10 percent of her class, and is in the National Society of High School Scholars. She has been an executive officer of the Student Council, been in Drama Club, Key Club, Thespians Society and FBLA. Her future ambition is to obtain a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Her platform is “Bringing Us All Together.”

For her talent performance, Barbara will be singing “You’re My Everything.”

Her parents are Barbara Short-Frauli and Douglas Naegele.

VALERIE RITO

is in the top 10 percent of her senior class at Liberal High School, is on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll, Student Council President, National Honor Society Vice President, Kansas Honor Scholar, Kansas State University Leadership Scholarship recipient and Academic Achievement Scholarship recipient, as well as many other awards and accomplishments. Her college ambitions are to pursue studies to become an Electrical Engineer/Industrial Engineer. Valerie’s platform is “Youth Involvement in School and Community.”

Valerie chose a drum performance playing to “Someone Like You.”

Valerie’s parents are Yvonne and Gilberto Rito.

KAYLA VARNES

is a senior at Liberal High School, and is in the top 20 percent of her graduating class. She is team captain of the girls varsity basketball team and also has plans to be a runner on a team marathon in Oklahoma City in March. She is also actively involved in her church youth group. Kayla’s future ambitions include obtaining a college degree with a major in Elementary Education – with a minor in English as a Second Language. Her platform is “Keeping Kids in School.”

Her talent presentation will be a Monologue titled “Betsy Ross.“

Kayla’s parents are Joyce and Michael Varnes.

LYDIA YOUNG

is a senior at Liberal High School and is in the top 10 percent of her class, is Salutatorian of Graduating Class of 2010, National Honor Society, KU Honor Scholar, National Achievement Academy Math Award, Honors English Award, Advanced Algebra Award, President of Drama Club, Redskin Singers, Junior Rotarian and many other awards and accomplishments. Lydia’s future career ambitions are to attain a Masters Degree in Mass Communications/Graphic Designer. Her platform is “Learning to Love Your Curves.”

Her talent presentation will be a vocal solo titled “Amazing Mayzie.”

Lydia’s parents are Teresa Young and Clark Young.

Jewell steps into new role

A new host for the Miss Liberal pageant has been announced. Chris Jewell will be the emcee for this year’s pageant, and his experience with production of the event gives him a hand up in hosting the gala.

Jewell has been involved in the production aspect of music and stage performance and talent shows in Nashville; Branson, Mo.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Tulsa, Okla., and in Wichita. Jewell has also been a production leader in Liberal for the past 20 years, which includes working on the Miss Liberal Pageant the past 10 years.

In addition to his production experience, Jewell has been a member of the Miss America judging system since 2005.

Being an emcee for this year's Miss Liberal pageant is new territory for Jewell since he’s usually in the production truck as technical director or behind a camera capturing the shots.

“I’m honored to be co-hosting this year’s pageant, and I’m looking forward to working with the extremely talented young women of Seward County,” Jewell commented.

Jewell has two sons; one is married and the other is engaged and will be married next year. Tim and his wife, Amanda, reside in Daytona Beach, Fla., where Tim is a junior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Adam lives in Denver, where he’s currently in his second year attending the Colorado Film School.

Jewell is a co-founder and General Manager of SWKO Inc. and is a Segment Producer and Director for KLKT TV in Liberal. Most recently, he was also host of the Daily Grind Morning Show on KLKT TV.

Miss Kansas to co-host

Miss Kansas 2009 Becki  Ronen is a graduate of Buhler High School,  where she received the Student of the Year Award, was State KMEA Tri-M Honorary Music Scholarship Winner, as well as captain of the Dance Team. She is a Senior at Kansas State University,  where she is majoring in trumpet Performance. Some of her honors include; KSU Trumpet Scholarship, KSU Symphony Band Scholarship, KSU Leadership Scholarship, KSU Academic  Achievement Scholarship, section leader of  KSU Trumpet Ensemble and KSU Bands Ambassador;  and  KSU Recruitment Board. Becki has done extensive traveling and performing in Europe.

Becki’s  appearances across the state have included promoting the Miss Kansas Program,  working with the Children’s Miracle Network, as well as presenting her platform, “A Heart for Art; Supporting Creativity in Our Children.” Becki is actively teaching and mentoring students through trumpet lessons.

Her scholastic ambition is to obtain a Doctorate of Music and play professionally.
