• Special to the Leader & Times

The theme this year is ‘Prevent Kitchen Fires.’

The Seward County Fire Department will kick off Fire Prevention Week 2013 with an open house on Sunday. The open house will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Kismet Pavilion.

Fire trucks and various pieces of firefighting equipment will be on display. Other items for viewing and discussion will be a hazardous materials truck and trailer with various monitors, suits and other tools that firefighters use when responding to HZMT incidents. (SCFD has the distinction of housing and staffing HZMT team No. 5 – which is one of the State of Kansas’ HZMT response teams.)

There will be drawings for smoke and CO detectors – a combustible gas detector will be given away. There will be packets of Fire Prevention Week material that SCFD received from a FEAK mini-grant to hand out, and there will also be refreshments.
