Cesar Burciaga ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third in a 30-6 road win over Hugoton Thursday.
Burciaga broke loose on a 25-yard run in the first quarter to give the Warriors an 8-0 lead, and in the second quarter Jose Aguilar extended the lead to 16-0 with and eight-yard touchdown run.
West took a 22-0 lead early in the third quarter when Burciaga took a pitch from Jett Brown and then threw a pass to Caleb Gearhart for a 20-yard touchdown reception.
Hugoton put together a solid drive that involved an outside running attack and was able to score to cut the lead to 22-6, but the Warriors made defensive adjustments after the drive and were abel to keep the Eagles off the board the rest of the game.
Burciaga added a late fourth quarter scored on a nine-yard touchdown run for the 30-6 win.
“The kids played hard,” West coach Butch King said. “The practiced great all week. We worked on stopping the option. We knew Hugoton likes to run that. The kids kept their assignments and did a good job. It was a physical game with lots of big hits on both sides.”
West (3-0) will return home at 4 p.m. Thursday to host Scott City.
