Daily Leader staff report

After a decent start to the Garden City wrestling tournament Friday, Liberal lost four wrestlers, three that still had Saturday matches, for violating team policy.

“I had to dismiss them form the team,” Liberal coach Mike Pewthers said.

Liberal was still able to place 11th after having to forfeit matches.

Justin McPhail led the team with a second place finish at the 189-pound weight class.

“Justin wrestled really well,” Pewthers said. “He made it to finals and got second. The kid from Colorado (Derek Good) was a returning state champ, and Justin only lost 3-1.”

Carlos Rodriguez went 2-2 and Akele Powdrill went 1-2.

“Several of our guys wrestled real well,” Pewthers said. Adebayo Braimah got sixth place.

“We did a good job wrestling,” Pewthers said. “It was just that one incident that cost us.”

Pewthers will now have to fill the gaps with members from the junior varsity squad.

“We talk to them about being prepared,” Pewthers said. “They went to Larned this weekend, and we had 10 kids place. Four champions and three seconds. The JV guys are there. They know where they need to be. They’ve been working hard to fill the gap.”

The revamped Redskins will travel to Lamar, Colo., for a dual Tuesday.

The Savages finished ninth at the Garden City tournament.
