Liberal came back in the fourth quarter in the season opener to beat Ulysses 56-41.
No fourth quarter comeback was needed Friday against the Guymon Tigers.
The fourth quarter itself was really unnecessary in the 56-0 romp that ended with a running clock the entire second half after the Redskins rolled to a 50-0 halftime lead.
The high-octane offense and aggressive kicking game helped push the Redskins out to a 22-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game, and the combination of quarterback Britton Abbott and wide receiver Trenton Hammond continued to be unstoppable. Hammons caught seven passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half.
Abbott had another strong night passing the ball despite losing key target Nolan Larkin who was sidelined with a concussion he received against Ulysses. Abbott completed 13 of 23 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for three more touchdowns while gobbling up 54 yards rushing.
Liberal ran 57 plays for 410 yards and all but 18 of those plays happened in the first half.
Liberal opened the game with a five-play, 49-yard drive that started with a 37-yard pass to Hammond and ended with a one-yard dive by Abbott.
Liberal executed an onside and recovered. Three plays and 49 yards later, Liberal was back in the end zone when Abbott hit Hammond for a 27-yard touchdown reception down the sideline for a 14-0 lead.
When Guymon’s offense made its first appearance of the game, it was a short one. The Tigers lost two yards on its first three pays of the game, but after allowing the Redskins two short fields, a Tiger punt pushed the Redskins back to their own 10 yard line.
It didn’t seem to matter.
The Redskins went on a 90-yard, 10-play drive that featured the running of Rex Heronemus who found his way in to the backfield after Jared Hasik broke his collar bone against Ulysses. Heronemus gained 10 yards on a pass from Abbott and another 50 yards on the ground on the drive including a three-yard grunt-like push to the end zone for a 22-0 lead. Heronemus rushed for a total of 84 yards on 13 carries including a touchdown on the night.
Guymon recovered another Liberal onside attempt, but could not take advantage of the excellent field position. The Tigers lost four yards on the drive and punted.
That brought the Redskin offense back on the field for their fourth drive, and fourth touchdown.
Liberal started at their own 43 yard line and nine plays later Hammond caught a seven-yard pass in the end zone for a 28-0 Liberal lead.
Guymon recovered another onside on the ensuing kick, but after losing 10 yards due to penalties, Guymon faced a third and 20 at their own 29.
Guymon’s quarterback attempted to make up the yardage on a deep pass, but it was intercepted by Mershek Wiltshire and returned 45 yards for a touchdown and a 36-0 Redskin lead.
The Tigers recorded their first first down of the game and put together a 19-yard drive but could not convert a fourth and six, and the Redskins took over on their own 32 yard line.
Three plays later, Abbott hit Hammond on a 53-yard pass for a touchdown and a 42-0 lead.
After a four-yard drive by Guymon the ended with a punt, the Redskins marched 64 yards in eight plays that ended with a seven-yard Abbott run to the end zone for a 50-0 lead.
Abbott added a score early in the second half, and coach Cliff Abbott pulled his starters the rest of the way.
