Obituary

HUGOTON – Lyle Gortner Sturdy, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at his home in Hugoton.

He was born Dec. 20, 1920, to Oscar and Ilah (Gortner) Sturdy in Mount Hope.

He married Betty Ely Oct. 20, 1944, in Wichita. She survives.

He graduated from Hugoton High School. He attended Wichita State University, where he played football and track. He was named an honorable mention Small College All-American in 1942 and was invited to play in the East-West Shrine Game in San Fransisco. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1943. He was inducted into the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He taught and coached at Hugoton High School and farmed until retirement in 1986.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge of Hugoton. He served on the Board of Directors Alumni Wichita State University.

He enjoyed golfing all over the United States.

Other survivors include one niece, Lynn Dale and husband, Melvin, Garden City; three grand nieces, Stephanie Sue Rowen and husband, Jeffery Dean, Van Alysten, Texas, Teresa Lyn Fulps and husband, Richard Scott, Liberty Hill, Texas, and Andrea Jo Hemmert and husband, Dennis James, Manhattan; great-nieces and nephews, Devon Michael, Lyle Jeffery, Olivia Nicole Rowen, Gage Ely Fulps, Miranda Kaye and Ethan Cole; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

o Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Hugoton with the Rev. Harry Cross and Pastor Keith Peachey presiding.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Paul’s Funeral Home.
