Special to Leader & Times

The Lady Redskin tennis team hosted a home tournament Saturday with seven teams competing-—Ashland, Scott City, Meade, and four teams from Liberal.

Twenty-four girls from LHS received the opportunity to gain valuable tournament experience in front of a home crowd.

To accommodate the attending schools, Ashland, Scott City, and Liberal’s Red team competed in a triangular varsity format while a Junior Varsity squad from Meade and three teams from Liberal competed in a Round Robin event.

Ashland took 1st Place Team honors with 18 points in the varsity competition followed by Liberal with 9 points.

Standout performances in the Round Robin event included senior Tania Sarabia going 3-0 and senior Ali Bowen finishing 2-1 in singles play.  For honors in doubles, the junior team of Kathy Hernandez and Katie Wehling went 3-0, and the team of Yuzby Torres and Ana Garcia also finished with a record of 3-0.

Individual Results for Varsity:

#1 Singles—Stephanie Sanchez lost her first match to Ashland’s Lexi Bruner 2-8, then warmed up to battle hard against Scott City’s Bre Smull losing 5-8.

#2 Singles—Tierra Stoney went 2-0 and finished 1st Place.  She dominated Scott City’s Christina Tilton 8-0, and then impressed the crowd with an 8-5 performance against Ashland’s Kelsey Marx.

#1 Doubles—Jordyn Apsley/Marina Arenivas, playing for the first time as a doubles team, lost to Ashland’s team of Matson/Isenbart 1-8.  They improved their chemistry in the second match, but lost to Scott City’s Wilcoxson/Rodriguez 3-8.

#2 Doubles—Marissa Rodriquez/Kylie Evans split success losing to Asland’s Guerra/Foster 1-8 but bounced back to defeat Scott City’s team of Tilton/Logan 8-3.
