For five years, county officials have been working on a project to bring the horse barn at the Seward County Fairgrounds back to life.

Money for the project has been provided through donations from a few local companies, including Mead Lumber, JAG, Abbott Construction and Weatherly Electric, and 10 individuals in the community.

Ten stalls have been completed to date, and county leaders would like to charge a rent of $20 per night for use of those stalls. In addition, some have suggested using the money collected from those fees to help with the remainder of the project.

The horse barn can hold 18 stalls plus an area to store hay. The goal of the project is to complete the stalls, provide a wash rack and to eventually do landscaping work around the barn itself and to the north.

Seward County commissioners are expected to discuss the item at tonight’s regular meeting, and the recommendation in the agenda packet calls for the allowance of rental funds from use of the horse stalls to be collected and applied to the ongoing horse barn project.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. today in the commission chambers in the Seward County Administration Building.
