Since 1982, Pheasants Forever has secured, saved and improved more than five million acres of habitat for wildlife, and Saturday, members of its local chapter will have a chance to help secure even more land for the feathered friends.

The Western Wings Chapter of Pheasants Forever is hosting its fourth annual banquet Saturday in the Seward County Ag Building in Liberal.

Chapter spokesman April Warden said happy hour will start at 5:30 p.m., and this is just the start of a night of fun.

“We’ll have all of our games set up and the silent auction and the live auction tables,” she said. “We’ll start supper at 6:30. Billy’s is catering. We’ll have steaks, baked potatoes, green beans and salads.”

There will be numerous games and chances to win prizes and guns, according to Warden.

“We’ll have High/Low, Last Man Standing, Scratch Raffle, General Raffle, bean bag toss,” she said. “There’s also going to be a women’s raffle table this year.”

A total of 16 guns will be given away.

“We’ll have a variety of different guns,” Warden said. “There’s also going to be a drawing for a lifetime hunting license for every attendee. We’ll also have a drawing for a youth gun.”

Warden said there will be games and auction items for youth as well.

“We have eight different pictures,” she said. “We have a duffel bag. We have some sculptures. We have a walking pheasant neon light. We have a pheasant quilt and pillow case.”

Warden said there are also Pheasants Forever memorabilia items such as shirts, caps and water bottles.

“There’s lots of different items that will be out on the raffle tables,” she said.

For the kids, there is a bean bag game, and a special gun will be raffled off just for youngsters, as well as some auction items.

“We do that every year,” Warden said. “They’ll have a blind and a shell box. I think there’s some water bottles this year, some shirts. There’s little items that kids can bid on.”

Warden said the banquet usually draws about 150 people, and she said with sponsorships, this year’s should bring in the same crowd.

Started in 1982, Pheasants Forever is dedicated to the conservation of Pheasants, quail and other wildlife through habitat improvements. Warden said the local chapter has joined together with several other area counties in hiring a biologist who will be working just for Southwest Kansas. This is just some of what local members do to help out.

“When they offer the hunter safety education, we work with them however we can in providing meals,” she said. “We help them with any funding that we can.”

In May, the Western Wings chapter will be offering two scholarships in honor of former member Russ Call, who died recently. This is just part of Pheasants Forever’s efforts to get youth involved and helping them understand habitat and wildlife.

“They have a program we call No Kid Left Indoors,” Warden said. “Basically, it’s to get kids outside and to get them involved. One hundred percent of our money that is raised is spent locally. We don’t have to send money to national.”
