You are holding the newest design of the Leader & Times, and it is something we are proud to share with you.

Some changes may seem radical, other subtle, but in the end, the goal was to provide the best possible news on a daily basis to our readers.

Here are a few explanations of the changes:

For decades, there has been a column down the left side of the front known as “the rail.” Notices of fund raisers, community events and more became the norm in this easy-to-find area of the paper.

While this area served a noble purpose, it also became stagnant when the same information was printed on the rail day after day. And, some groups felt like their news was not as important when it was placed on the rail.

The rail is gone, but the announcements will continue. Now, announcements will get one front page run, one inside run, and then they will be placed in the Calendar section on Page 2.

The benefit is reclaiming valuable space for additional news items for the readers.

This will also be seen on the inside of the paper as the brief item space will be reclaimed for more state and national news that appeals to local readers.

You will notice that the page headers are smaller. This reduction in the header allows us to expand the space for more news and photos.

The Opinion Page has switched from a two column format to a three-column format with a smaller header. This allows us to have more space for your letters and opinions. It also allows us to start a new feature which you see right below this column called Thumbs Up/Down.

When we see good things happening in our community, we will give them the thumbs up. When we see things that we can do better, we will give them a thumbs down.

Feel free to suggest either, and the editorial staff will consider them.

You will see little change with the headline styles or body copy. Managing Editor Kurt Gaston introduced these fonts in 1990 during a major overhaul of the paper under the direction of publisher Jim Elsberry. The only reason to change them is if there were something better.

There isn’t.

Our body copy is one of the most easy-to-read fonts available, and the headline contrast is second to none.

We hope you enjoy looking today where other newspapers will be years from now. We believe you deserve a trend-setting effort. Enjoy the newest edition of the L&T.
