The Warrior seventh graders were competitive in all three games they played Monday at Abe Hubert, but they fell short in all three contests.
The C-team lost 16-12. The Warriors did not score in the first quarter but only gave up one basket to Abe Hubert. West went to the half with a 6-2 lead. But the Warriors struggled to score in the second half. The Hawks outscored West 14-6 in the second half.
Shaddock Woods led West with four points and Jason Relles and Mario Cardeñas each had two.
The B-team fell 28-17. Abe Hubert had balanced scoring in each quarter with seven, seven, six and eight points while the Warriors turned in quarter of six, five, three and three.
Hunter Rinehart led the B-team with eight points, and Adrian Carrasco added three.
“We played good the first half, it just came down to missing free throws,” West coach Pat Knott said. “We were five of 16.”
The West B-team is now 2-1.
The free throw problems continued in the A-game, but in a slightly different way. The Warriors only hit one of eight attempts, but they allowed Abe Hubert to score 17 points on 32 attempts at the charity stripe in a 34-27 loss for the Warriors.
West started off slow as Abe Hubert jumped out on a 10-2 run. But the Warriors responded in the second quarter, and by halftime the Warriors only trailed 16-15.
The game was tied after the third quarter, 23-23, but the physical game took its toll as three Warriors fouled out, and Abe Hubert outscored the Warriors 11-4 in the final quarter for the 34-27 win.
“I thought we had a chance, but three people fouling out killed us,”
Knott said. “We play good, but there’s a time when you have to give up the point and don’t foul. We had a good effort and the kids are working together.”
Britton Abbott led the Warriors with 10 points, Blake Stout added eight and Trenton Hammond contributed three.
West (2-1) will face Guymon, Okla., at 4 p.m. today at the Warrior Indoor Stadium.
