Local chapter members of the Patriot Guard Riders lead the funeral procession of World War II veteran Leonard W. Spady north on U.S. Highway 83 Saturday on their way to Restlawn Cemetery for graveside services. Spady, 90, died Monday, July 22, at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City. He was born Jan. 13, 1923, to Wilbert and Bertha (Gaede) Spady in Texas County, Okla. He enlisted into the U.S. Army during WWII at Fort Sill, Okla., and served in Calcutta, India, as a lineman in the field artillery. He was a mechanic for years, then worked for Able Dirt Construction, then the Seward County Landfill for 17 years. He was a crane operator for Liberal Iron & Metal for 17 years, retiring in 1992. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Lane Day Post No. 3166. Patriot Guard Riders from all of Southwest Kansas, along with American Legion Riders and H.O.G. members, will be in Liberal at 7 p.m. Friday for the Veterans Appreciation Show at the grandstands at the Five-State Fair.
