A slow start to a Sunday matinee for the Saints ended with an 89-75 loss in Dodge City, Seward’s first conference loss of the season.
Seward trailed by eight at half, and the Conqs took the confidence of the first half into a near perfect second half. Dodge City shot 79 percent in the second half and made 210 of 24 free throw attempts.
While Seward shot a decent 52 percent in the second half, it was the rebounding of the Conqs that made the difference. Dodge grabbed 15 more rebounds than the Saints, and converted those possessions into points.
Seward standout Tony Smith was held to six points against the Conquistadors, only hitting two of 10 from the field while Dodge City’s Chuck Coley lit up the scoreboard with 27 points. He was followed by Bruce Massey, Jr., who scored 26 points for the Conqs.
Seward was led by Marky Nolen who scored 20 points and Jon Tassin who put in 19.
The loss dropped No. 17 Seward to 5-1 in the conference, tied with Hutchinson for the lead.
The Saints will host Garden City at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Green House.
