Daily Leader staff report
The last time the Southwestern Heights Mustangs played Sublette, they pulled out a three-point win.
After that nail-biter, the Mustangs pulled out a one-point win over Hugoton.
But Friday night in the semi-finals of the Hi-Plains League tournament in Garden City, the Mustangs left no questions with a 52-39 win over Sublette to advance to the championship.
The Mustangs faced Leoti for the tourney title late Saturday.
The two played to a 14-13 first quarter, but the Mustang defense clamped down int he second and held the Larks to five points while the Mustangs put 12 on the board to take a 26-18 lead at half.
Both offenses improved in the third, but the Mustangs added three more points to their lead in the third and two more in the fourth for the 52-39 win.
The Larks simply could not run their offense the way they did a week ealrier in a three-point loss to the Mustangs and relied hevily on the outside shot.
And they weren’t falling.
The Mustangs, however, were able to execute their offense and pushed the ball inside to senior Cory Ryan.
Ryan led the Mustangs with 18 points. Jacob Flroes scored 11, and Cody Eakes scored eight.
