The 64-team Class 4A division in Kansas will now have two separate divisions to alow for a more balanced playing field.

In a 35-27 vote of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors last April, the schools within the classification needed to have 33 in favor of the change. Forty-two favored the change with 22 opposed, and the change will take effect for volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball during the upcoming school year and in football in 2014.

Class 4A will now have a Division 1 and Division 2 with the 32 larger schools making up Div. 1 and the smallest 32 student bodies making up Division 2.

According to a release from KSHSAA Executive Director Gary Musselman, staff is working to identify host sites to facilitate the new format, and the effort is in progress.
