The Liberal Bee Jays had no trouble reaching base against the Owasso Angels Saturday night at Brent Gould Field.
Much of the time, the A’s gave the bases away for free, and those additional runners were able to cross the plate in a 9-1 Liberal win for a 3-0 start to the 2013 season.
Owasso walked the bases loaded in the first inning, but the Bee Jays could not capitalize and hit into an inning-ending double play.
The Bee Jays again loaded the bases in the second inning, and a Tanner Rainey one-out single allowed two Bee Jays to score for a 2-0 lead.
Liberal made it 3-0 in the third inning when Owasso committed a balk with a runner at third.
Dylan Delso blew the game open in the fourth when he roped a two-out triple down the right field line with the bases loaded. Owasso attempted to catch Delso at third, but an errant throw sailed by Cesar Marrero, and Delso came around to score to give the Bee Jays a 7-0 lead.
Owasso was able to score a run in the fifth, but it was the only run the A’s would get.
Liberal added two more runs when a soft tapper down the third base line was close to rolling foul, but the A’s catcher tossed his mask and it made contact with the ball. By rule, the play is a three-base error, and two Bee jays scored for the 9-1 lead.
And it could have been worse.
“We swung at some bad pitches early to get them out of a jam,” Liberal coach Brandon Kitch said. “Tanner rainey came up with a big hit. He is who we want at the plate. Guys behind him are getting their feet wet. We have to have competitive at bats, and stay in our zone.”
Liberal (3-0) will host Hays (3-0) to start league play at 7 p.m. tonight.
