After knocking off Scott City earlier in the week, South’s seventh grade team looked to move to make it two in a row Thursday against Ulysses.

Unfortunately, the Cubs had other plans.

Ulysses jumped out to an early lead and maintained distance, handing the Apaches a 40-13 loss.

Kyler Ward led the Apaches with seven points.

Marcus Phillips chipped in four, and Samuel Obando had a bucket.

The Apaches struggled to score in the first quarter, and for the first four minutes South’s defense held the Cubs at bay as well.

But Ulysses found success in the paint and jumped out to a 13-3 lead after the first quarter.

South played better defense in the second quarter, forcing a number of Ulysses turnovers. Still, the Apaches struggled to convert those turnovers into points, missing on a number of fast-break opportunities.

The Apaches did win the quarter, 6-5, and narrowed the halftime score to 18-9.

But the wheels came off in the third quarter.

South continued to struggle scoring, and Ulysses kicked in a transition game. The Apaches gave up 13 points in the quarter and didn’t score to fall behind 32-9.

South managed to scored two buckets in the final quarter while Ulysses put in four baskets for the 40-13 final score.

The night didn't go any better for the B-team.

South dropped the game to Ulysses 51-10.

South was led in scoring by three-point specialist Joel Hernandez who connected on two long-range buckets for six points. Jason Rios added a basket, and Hector Nevarez chipped in two free throws.

South was blanked in the first and fourth quarters while scoring five in the second and five in the third.
