ULYSSES – Charles Raymond Howard, 86, died Friday, May 24, 2013, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 5, 1927, to Arthur L. and Ruby L (Hampton) Howard in Grant County.

He married Mary Louise Delong May 31, 1947. She survives.

He  attended Grant County Schools.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was aboard USS Beatty DD756.  He was discharged in St. Louis on July 2, 1946.  He then returned to Grant County.

He spent 52 years in building and concrete construction with Tarbet Construction and Ready-Mix Company in street and highway construction.  He retired July 31, 1999, at the age of 72.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ulysses.

He was a lifetime member of Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post No. 79 in Ulysses.

Survivors also include one daughter, Vivian Smith, Ulysses; three brothers, Arthur and wife, Beverly, Lakewood, Colo., Ronald and wife, Juanita, Longmont, Colo., and Richard Lloyd and wife, Lorie, Fall River; three sisters, May Ellison, Bessie Smith and husband, Ray, and Mary Lou and husband, Buddy, Roosevelt, Utah; two grandsons, Bryan K. Smith and wife, Schawna, Ulysses, and Christopher Howard and wife, Lynne, Hernando, Fla.; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Lottie Howard, Dallas;  and many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Wayne; and four brothers, Clifford, John, Kenneth and Levoy.

• Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Ulysses, with Pastor Steve Swann Jr. presiding.

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post No. 79.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church or the Grant County Senior Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS  67880.
