Saints pitching runs out, finish third with 8-4 loss PDF Print E-mail

• Leader & Times

After losing on the opening day of the super regional, the Saints put together a string of three straight wins before a lack of pitching finally caught up with Seward in the final three, and an 8-4 loss to Coffeyville ended Seward’s season in third place in the Region 6 tournament at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita.

The Saints fell behind 3-0 in the top of the second inning Monday to the Ravens and chased Coffeyville the rest of the way.

Seward scratched a run across the plate in the fourth inning, but Coffeyville added a run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth, and run in the seventh and one more in the top of the ninth for an 8-1 lead.

The Saints attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth and pushed three runs across the plate, but the hole was too deep, and the Saints fell 8-4.

Coffeyville faced Neosho and forced the “if” game after winning 5-3.

The Region 6 championship will be determined today in a rematch between Neosho and Coffeyville. Both teams have one loss.

Seward had to expend its pitching staff throughout the losers bracket, and by the time the game against Coffeyville started, coach Galen McSpadden had only one arm that was rested.

The rest of the staff had to fill in the gaps, but the long run through the loser’s bracket left the Saints short on the mound.

The Saints defense also provided second-chance opportunities for the Ravens with two errors.

But the Saints showed grit after a disappointing loss in the first round and knocked off two nationally ranked teams and getting a revenge win against Kansas City.
