Dropping a double header is never acceptable to a team or a coach, but for the Lady Redskins, losing two non-conference games to Garden City on the road showed some improvement form the previous meeting.
Liberal lost to Garden City at home, 24-5 and 12-1 April 5.
Friday, the Lady Redskins lost 11-1 and 9-2 and depended on Jaycee Darroch to throw both games due to an injury to Brittney Granger.
“We played real well,” Liberal coach Pat Knott said. “Jaycee stepped up and threw a lot of spin balls, a lot of location. Defensively if we made a few plays we would have stayed in it a little more. But I was very pleased with what we were doing.”
Both games were competitive early, and the Lady Redskins were able to get out of jams.
But the Lady Redskin bats couldn’t take advantage, and the Lady Buffaloes were able to score in the middle and late innings to take the wins. For the first time all season, Liberal forced Garden City to play all seven innings in the final game.
“I felt comfortable with Jaycee,” Knott said. “She bought into it. She grew up a little bit on her knowledge about challenging.”
