After a 7-0-shutout loss to the Laverne Tigers to start the district baseball tournament, Turpin’s chances of making it to day 2 of the district tournament looked bleak. But the Cardinals bounced in back in Game 2 to defeat the tournament’s top-seed Mooreland, 13-10.
Turpin trailed 2-0 to Laverne until late when they gave up 5 more runs. The Cardinals could muster no offense in the loss.
Turpin entered the Mooreland game with their backs to the wall, knowing a loss would end their season.
Eric Bromlow’s 2 RBI double in the third gave the Cardinals a 6-4 lead that they never relinquished.
“Their pitcher threw pretty hard,” Cardinals coach Mario Mendoza said. “But our guys were disciplined at the plate. We put the ball in play to get a lot of those runs across; a lot of sacrifices.”
Turpin built a 13-6 lead and headed to the bottom of the seventh with that score. Two fielding errors early in the inning gave the Bearcats hope for a rally, but Turpin ended it at four runs to advance to day 2.
Laverne defeated Mooreland in the first day nightcap. Turpin will face Laverne at noon, and will have to defeat the Tigers twice to advance.
