The Southwest Symphony Society orchestra will present its spring concert, “Spring String Event,” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the Seward County Community College/Area Technical School Showcase Theater under the direction of Grant Mathews. The talented group of local musicians will play a variety of  string music. Refreshments will be served and admission is a free-will donation.
“We always try to make the holiday concert a combination of classical, folk and popular music,” Mathews said. “I think this is a great way to introduce a wide variety of music to both our local musicians and our audience.”
Mathews said he will be stepping down as conductor after this concert due to a busy schedule but plans to continue to play with the orchestra.
The concert will include:
• Russian Sailor Dance by Gliere
• Hungarian Dance by Brahms
• Irish Suite by Leroy Anderson
• Irish Tune from County Derry and Shepherd's Hey by Grainger
• Fantasy on Simple Gifts – traditional folk song
• Over the Rainbow – dedicated to Liberal's 125th Birthday
• The Tempest by RW Smith
• Pomp and Circumstance by Elgar
• America the Beautiful – the Carmen Dragon arrangement
• Rhosymedre – English folk song
• Blackberry Blossom – featuring violin solo by Chris Seemen
