The 4-H building at the Seward County Fairgrounds was unexpectedly demolished in 2008 due to the presence of black mold.
Plans were in the works to build a new 4-H building when the economy turned downward and federal funds for such projects evaporated.
With no building to host activities in, local 4-H youth officials turned to various locations around Liberal, including the Presbyterian Church, the K-State Research and Extension office and the Ag Building.
An unfinished room in the Seward County Administration Building was even suggested as an option, and tonight, officials with the Extension office will look at plans for the room, which have been drawn up.
“This location is especially desirable because it is centrally located and easily accessible to youth throughout town through the use of the city bus system,” said information in tonight’s county commission agenda packet.
The information also indicated that most of the materials for finishing what is being called a “youth room” are on hand, and labor would be the predominant expense of the project.
In addition to updating the commission on the Extension’s current activity, officials with the office will present a proposal to finish the room, next to the commission chambers in the Administration Building.
The room would be used for 4-H youth projects including robotics lab, club meetings, project meetings, council meetings and the Extension’s Summer Fun Thursdays events.
The Seward County Commission meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. today in the commission chambers in the Administration Building.
