Don Hall resigns from coaching LHS hoops

Young people these days have no initiative. Things were different back in April 1963, when a 3-year-old was transformed into a fireman.
“Fireman, age 3, douses TV,” read the headline of the Southwest Daily Times. Young Mr. Todd Swearingen was watching an episode of “Freddie the Fireman” when he caught a glimpse of the glowing tubes in the back of the television. He promptly went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water and doused the tubes sufficiently, shorting out the television. When the repairman came to look at the damaged television set, he declared it was not worth saving and should be trashed.
The moral of the story: Take initiative but take time to make sure it s the correct initiative.
For any basketball team that hopes to be good, there is a great coach pushing them to be better and encouraging them as people. Liberal was in the market for a new coach at Liberal High School.
“Hall resigns as basketball coach,” read the headline of the Southwest Daily Times. The article continued, “the Board of Education last night approved a request by Coach Don Hall that he be relieved of his duties as head coach of the Senior High Basketball team.” The coach resigned because he had been given more and more administrative duties.
Hall had also been named the assistant principal of the high school the previous fall. He wanted to devote the full amount of time to the administrative duties that had been placed on him. The superintendent of schools said that “the search is now underway for a new basketball coach.”
It is common knowledge nowadays that college is insanely expensive. Every parent wants their kids to have a good college education, yet most cannot pay for college out of their pockets.
In 1963, everything was less pricey, including college.
“Local scholarships for 1963 LHS Graduates total $2,350,” read the Times  headline. The article explained that 11 Liberal firms and organizations “are making available a total of $2,350 in scholarship money to be awarded to Liberal High School seniors of the 1963 graduating class.”
It s crazy to imagine that a $200 scholarship could make the difference between attending a college or going straight into the work force today, but in 1963, such an amount could do that.
Track season is an intense time of year. Sunburns, worries about skin cancer and pulled muscles are all things that are frequent occurrences for teens today.
In 1963, the Redskins with the help of junior Larry Card, were tearing up the season and the district with record-breaking performances.
“Larry Card has been quite an aid to the Liberal Redskin track team,” the paper reported. “The junior speedster is a member of the 880 and mile relay teams that are undefeated this season. The Redskins won the relays along with three other events as they swept the Guymon Relays Saturday.”
Track season for the 2013 LHS team has just begun and we wish the best to the athletes of our hometown Redskins.
