Many scenes from around Liberal

1963
“Liberal getting feature spot in music show,” read the Southwest Daily Times front page headline.
Liberal had been selected by Emporia State College authorities, who were conducting a survey prior to publishing a report on music in Kansas, as one of six select cities to be highlighted in the survey.
Among the reasons cited for naming Liberal as one of the selected sites for the musical survey. The Liberal Music Association had been recognized for many years as outstanding musical group among cities of that size in the state.
A request was made for programs of the past two decades, information as to how the local group manages to operate independently of national management of the past presidents of the association who were referred to for a formal recommendation.
Elsewhere, things were not going well for Chinese refugees. “Report 20 executed refugees from red China,” reported the Southwest Daily Times. Communist authorities executed more than 20 hungry Chinese who had ransacked a food storehouse in February in the coastal city of Swanko.
“Eyman sells shoe store,” read the local news headline of the Southwest Daily Times.
The long time locally owned store was being sold. Eyman’s Shoe Store at 218 North Kansas had been sold to Browns Shoe Fit Co. The store was established here in March 1947 by Darwin Eyman who first operated the store on W. 2nd St. and for the past 11 years, has occupied the north Kansas location.
The new owners operate a total of 41 shoe stores in Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Colorado. The parent firm has been in business for 53 years since opening it's first store.
The new manager for the store here is Gary Thayer who arrived in Liberal this morning he had been co-manager of the company for two years and had been with the company for a total of 10 years. He is a member of the Catholic Church.
The company planned to continue the same line of shoes which Eymen had carried and planned to add the Red Cross brand of ladies shoes. Eymen said he will remain in the store through Easter assisting the new owners. Pass that time, his plans are indefinite. Mrs. Eymen and the girls will definitely remain in Liberal until after the present school term ends he said.
Scenes around town was a little article that ran in the 1963 issues of the Times. The little article reported the small random stories. “Business establishments within the same block are undergoing changes in ownership this week..... Bicycle licenses going like hot cakes as the police department moves the sales office..... A small girl about 6 walking down the street with large plastic fish in one hand stopped in front of a downtown flag to solemnly recite Pledge of Allegiance......... Man much cheered about report that pet parakeet in household is a male. Up to now he had been outnumbered by wife, two daughters and a lady dog. A neighbor who is an authority on the subject checked the parakeets beak and pronounce it is indeed a he........ “Who are you going to vote for?” was the most frequently asked questioned around town. The school board and county commission election drew near. Women and girls were hitting the street in “shorts,” men paused in front of gardening tool displays and cast longing glances at fishing equipment and outboard motors.
