To the city commisssion candidates;
I read with intense interest about the account of the commissioner forum that was held on Tuesday evening. I could not be there because of illness – I wanted to be.
Concerning the police officers. I'm wondering if we are paying these dedicated men and women enough. It takes a bunch of money nowadays to live, with taxes and insurance going up and groceries going higher each day.
Many of our officers and/or their spouses have to have another source of income to live, especially if they have children. They may have no hope of ever owning a house here in Liberal.
Most law enforcement men and women have an intense desire to be in that profession- – maybe it's been their dream for years – but they simply can't afford to stay in our city.
I agree with Bonnie Cummins, who wrote earlier, the money we would pay a firm to see how to grow our city would possibly be better spent by paying our officers and keeping them and their money in our city.
We have a very capable city manager, an equally capable economic director and a wonderful Chamber of Commerce, which, if they would work together, they could do the same as a firm from out of town. They could drive 60 to 80 miles, talk with our neighboring cities, see what they are doing, get their ideas, expand on them and do better than they are doing.
I'm sure the job of city commissioner is a tough job. You're "never right,” and you very seldom get a "Thanks for a job well done." I've held a few different positions myself, so I speak from experience.
I give each of you much credit for inspiring to take on the task.
