Liberal High School recently announced its valedictorian and salutatorian for the 2012-2013 school year.
The 2013 valedictorian is Victoria Calderon, daughter of Frank and Donna Calderon.
Victoria has been in “That” Liberal Band for all four years and was the recipient of the Patrick Gilmore Award for Band in 2012.
Victoria has participated in NHS, Key Club, and tennis for three years, and is currently secretary of Key Club. She has also been involved with various drama productions at LHS, and is a member of the International Thespian Troupe.
Victoria has logged more than 100 hours of community service, and has participated as a “big in schools” for Big Brothers Big Sisters for two years. She was also chosen to be one of the LHS HOBY Ambassadors her sophomore year.
Academically, Victoria has received the award for outstanding student in Spanish I, college algebra, AP biology, AP United States History, and AP English composition.
She has also been named a KU Honor Scholar and the Kansas Governor’s Top 1 percent for LHS and was chosen to participate in the FHSU math relays for two years.
She has been accepted to the University of Kansas honors program, and intends to study neuroscience with a minor in English.
The salutatorian for the class of 2013 is Riley Hay. Riley is the daughter of Rodney and Michelle Hay.
During her time at LHS, she has participated in varsity volleyball, softball, basketball, dance team, National Honor Society, competitive math relays, prom committee, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and student council, serving as the sophomore class president, junior class secretary, and an executive council member.
Riley has received many academic awards throughout her years at LHS, including the superintendent's honor roll all four years of high school, all WAC academic team and multiple outstanding student awards. In addition to academic awards,
Riley was also recognized as a part of the All-WAC Volleyball 2012 First Team, received honorable mention All-WAC for the 2010 softball and volleyball teams, and was recognized as a triple threat athlete for two years.
Riley plans to attend K-State and study chemical engineering.
