Gov. Mark Parkinson has signed a State of Disaster Emergency proclamation in response to the severe winter storms and dangerously cold temperatures that have impacted the state in recent days.

The declaration calls for a five-day suspension of certain provisions of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act dealing with hours of service. This will allow motor carriers, including suppliers of propane, to work longer hours in order to make sure all customers have an adequate supply of propane for heating.

“With temperatures in the single digits during the day and dropping to well below zero at night, Kansans are using more heating fuel than normal,” said Parkinson. “In order to protect the health and safety of Kansans, I am suspending the ‘hours of service’ provisions so that adequate supplies of propane can be delivered to Kansans to keep them warm this week.”

Counties named in the declaration are Allen, Anderson, Atchison, Bourbon, Brown, Cherokee, Clay, Cloud, Coffey, Crawford, Dickinson, Doniphan, Douglas, Franklin, Greenwood, Geary, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Labette, Leavenworth, Linn, Lyon, Marshall, Miami, Morris, Nemaha, Neosho, Pottawatomie, Republic, Riley, Shawnee, Osage, Wabaunsee, Washington, Wilson, Woodson and Wyandotte.
