MANHATTAN — The run for the Lady Buffaloes came to an end Thursday at the Class 2A state tournament in a 62-42 loss to top-seeded and defending state champion Jefferson County North.
The Meade Lady Buffs made their third consecutive trip to the Class 2A State Tournament in Manhattan.
Jefferson County North took control first and quickly put two points on the board. The Lady Buffs came back strong and added two of their own. It was a back-and-forth battle for the first half of the quarter before the Chargers eventually built a strong first quarter lead outscoring the Lady Buffaloes 20-12.
The second quarter scoring leveled out, and each team scored nine apiece giving the Chargers an eight-point lead going into the locker room at half time.
Second half action started with sophomore Tarah Wiens quickly collecting her fourth personal foul.
Meade relied on the quickness of freshman Natalie Thompson and Lexus Luetters to fill in the gaps.
The Lady Buffaloes kept fighting but continued to trail by 13 after three quarters of play. Turnovers continued to plague the Lady Buffs as they have all season, but they were able to cut the lead to 11.
That was as close as they were able to get and as the final seconds ticked off the clock the Lady Buffaloes fell short, 62-42.
The Lady Buffs were led in scoring by sophomore Bailey Olvera with 15, and Kinzie Friesen finished with eight.
Jefferson County North was led by junior Jacee Kramer who scored 23 of her 32 total points in the first half. The Lady Buffs finished their season with a record of 14-9.
