JJ Lewis lit up the scoreboard against Maize South in the first round of Sub-State Thursday. Lewis scored 19 points to lead Liberal to a 68-49 win over Maize South.
The Redskins had a long lay-off after a disappointing loss to Garden City Feb. 19. Weather forced the cancellation of the home finale with Dodge City, but there was no rust on Liberal at Maize.
Liberal jumped out to a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but it was a blistering second that put some distance between the Redskins and the Mavericks.
The Redskins jumped out to a double digit lead, and by halftime the Redskins had a 36-25 advantage.
Blake Stout was able to knock down the perimeter shots, and Britton Abbott was able to slow down Maize South in the paint.
The Redskins continued to outpace the Mavericks down the stretch.
Stout added 14 points behind Lewis’ 19, Abbott scored 13, and William Ross had 10.
The win sets up a rematch with Western Athletic Conference foe Hays. The Indians dominated Great Bend 48-20 to advance to the Sub-State championship.
Liberal and Hays will tip off at 6 p.m. in Hays.
