After a 46-36 win over the Lady Dusters, the undefeated Lady Red Devil’s were awarded the District Championship title in Texhoma Saturday evening. However, the boys District Championship plaque would get on the bus with the Beaver Dusters, after the Red Devils fell to Beaver in overtime, 61-56.
By the first quarter, the Lady Red Devils came out swinging by establishing an early lead of 11-2. By the end of the second half, the Lady Dusters were only trailing Texhoma by four points. The second half would prove to be victorious for the Lady Red Devils as they out scored the Dusters by as much as 11 points.
Lady Red Devils Head Coach Britton Gabriele said his team had set a rather large goal for themselves - and that goal was met.
“This is a big win for our program and I am very proud of our girls,” Gabriele said. “One of the goals that we have had all season long was to come into the regional tournament without any losses, and so we were able to do that. That is always a good start. We know that we are not done here. We have some more goals that we want to achieve this season, but I was just pleased with the overall team effort.
Gabriele added his team works as a unit, and all should be commended for a job well done.
“They all stand out and they all work hard together,” he said. “I thought our defense did very well tonight. There were several turnovers, we got a lot of traps. Basically, I was pleased, overall, with how we performed.”
Texhoma Senior Ann Freeman scored 11 points for the team, followed by Senior Abbie Ferguson with 10 points. Beaver Senior Cassie Howell scored 12 points for the Lady Dusters - all of which were from the three-point mark.
The Duster trailed the Red Devils throughout the majority of the boys game. However, in overtime, the Dusters came alive and took home the regional title.
The Dusters only led the Red Devils by two points in the first quarter, the lead would then shift to Texhoma. By the end of the first half Texhoma enjoyed a lead of 13 points. The third quarter saw the Red Devils again with a lead over the Dusters. By the fourth quarter, the Dusters had made up their minds to catch the Red Devils. The fourth quarter ended in a tie of 51-51.
In overtime, the Dusters sealed the fate of the Red Devils with a final score of 61-56. Dusters Head Coach Garrett Bebermeyer knew if his team would be just fine if they scored first in overtime - and they did.
“I thought, in the first half, we didn’t play very well - it took us too long to wake up,” Bebermeyer said. “But, in the second half we played good enough to force overtime. I knew if we scored first, we would be OK. I though Garrett Weber hit some pretty good shots and in overtime we all the free throws that we needed to.”
Red Devils Sophomore Dylan Koehn led Texhoma in points on the board with 23 points. Duster Sophomore Garrett Weber scored a total of 22 points for Beaver.
Both teams will advance to the district playoffs in Fort Supply on Thursday evening.
